How does one obtain a Permanent Resident (PR)?

 The eligibility for a Canada PR visa is through a points-based system. The applicants are assessed on various points such as age, language, education and work experience. Canada offers different immigration programs through which you can apply for permanent residency status, among these the most popular are:

How do I use the Express Entry for a PR?

A candidate applying for the PR visa through the Express Entry program will have to go through a points-based selection system (CRS score). The Express Entry System basically consists of three sub-categories:

Canadian Experience Class

If you are a skilled worker with oversea work experience, you can apply for a PR visa under the Federal Skilled Workers Program. To qualify under this program, you should be able to get 67 points out of 100 in the eligibility factors given below

 Those between 18-35 years get maximum points. Those above 35 get lesser points while the maximum age to qualify is 45 years.

Under this category, your educational qualification must be equal to higher secondary education under Canadian standards.

Your occupation must be listed as Skill Type 0 or Skill Level A or B of the National Occupational Classification (NOC).

If your spouse or common-law partner is willing to migrate with you to Canada, you are entitled to 10 extra points for adaptability.

You can gain a maximum of 10 points if you have a valid offer from a Canadian employer.

Although you were not able to receive an invitation due to insufficient CRS points through Federal Skilled Worker program, there are three more paths to obtain PR

Express Entry via Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

This class requires  

A) minimum 1 year skilled job experience in Canada

B) minimum English score CLB 5

C) does not require to have 67 points (six factors points) 

Alberta Express Entry (AB EE)

This program has relatively low program requirements compared to FSW

A) Minimum CRS score 300 points

B) Minimum English score CLB 5

C) A candidate must have some relations to Alberta in terms of Job, Education or Siblings.  

Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS)

This program will take the longest processing time (3 years), but it has the lowest program requirements among other available programs


A) Must hold an LMIA from Alberta employer

B) Work experience in Alberta for 1 year

C) Minimum English score CLB 5

D) No point basis system.
